Where Was God When Bad Things Happened?

This article is especially for the one who believes in the supreme being, God.

Christians are in their numbers across the globe. A recent statistic shows that there are over 2.3 billion Christians globally as of 2021. That is a whooping 34% of the world’s population, making it the most common religion today.

I am a Christian, a bible-believer. I have been one throughout my adult life. So, I relate firsthand to the various kinds of challenges that believers all over the world face.

At times, terrible things happen to good people and in this context specifically, to those that add Christianity to their goodness. It could seem as though, despite their calling on God to help or save them, they still suffer and have no evident answers.

Hope begins to grow weary from waiting and expecting. Unbelief creeps in. In some instances, people lose their faith in God.

Christians experience ridicule arising from scenarios like these. People who do not believe in God have mocked and questioned where God was when all the bad things happened to those who prayed and believed in Him.

I have seen Christians pray and wait for answers on an issue for as long as 10 to 15 years. Some have stayed longer. They just kept praying and praying, and nothing seemed to happen.

Many who are weary from waiting, get to a point where although they do not deny the existence of God, they stop trusting and seeking His help. They tend to feel like maybe He does not care as much as they have heard.

In some cases, it is that some sudden evil befell Christians; maybe they lose a loved one or experienced something tragic. And they cannot process how or why it should be so. Why would the God they serve and believe in not save them?

The instances are endless. It won’t take a few minutes of thinking to recall someone that proclaimed faith in God yet still suffered one ill-fate in life.

Maybe it’s even a personal thing; you are the one who had a heavy blow in life even while you kept calling on God.

I have personally had mine, too.

I lost my best friend a few years ago to a terminal illness. She was a believer. We prayed and believed God for her healing, but she passed. God bless her soul.

Now, what do you think? Where was God?

Hey! You’re not expecting me, a fellow human, to give you a detailed answer, are you? No way.

But here is what I have to say.

I am doubtless about one thing: God was very much sovereign, as He forever will be when all those things happened to every single believer who hoped and prayed to Him.

So why then did they happen? Did we not pray enough? Or a right? Or maybe there was some hidden sin stumbling our prayers? Maybe we left the will of God?

All these and more are the questions, thoughts, and assumptions that come to mind. Who can answer them correctly?

Know this. No matter how much of God and his ways we think we understand, it is deep insight to settle this truth in our hearts.

The truth is that we are on earth, and God is in his abode. We have never seen or interacted with Him face-to-face. So, we have not mastered Him.

Man, with all the learnings & insight about God from the holy Bible, prophets, and all kinds of theological dissection, is still far from comprehending the Almighty God.

No one can say that they fully understand or know God.

We might be getting something wrong, or maybe not. I do not know. But what I know is that God and His ways are beyond the grasp of man.

Life is a mystery, do you not think so?

I mean, if you’re going to believe in a sovereign being that you have never seen or met, then it makes the most sense not to hinge your belief on what you can see, feel, or experience.

What do I believe?

I believe God is good.

He is the greatest and everything He does stems from the best intentions.

I also believe God hates it when bad things happen to good people.

Finally, I think that after this life, we would better understand what happens down here. We would get all the answers to our questions. Then, it would all make sense.
